BHSS Pre-Conference C: Shielding Our Future: A Holistic Approach to Keeping Youth Safe
with Prenicia Clifton
Wed, Dec 10, 2025 8:30am-11:30am

Session Description:

"Shielding Our Future: A Holistic Approach to Keeping Kids Safe" is a powerful 3-hour workshop designed to equip educators, youth workers, and community leaders with practical tools to protect children from harm. Grounded in a holistic safety model, this session addresses four key areas: self-harm and suicide prevention, protection from predators and peer abuse, youth data and cyber safety, and active threat preparedness. Participants will explore real-world strategies to recognize risks, respond effectively, and foster trauma-informed, supportive environments. Walk away with actionable steps and resources to build safer spaces where every child can grow, thrive, and feel protected.

Session objectives:

1. Identify early warning signs of self-harm, suicide risk, and mental health challenges in children and youth.

2. Recognize and respond to grooming behaviors, peer-to-peer abuse, and bullying using trauma-informed approaches.

3. Implement best practices for protecting youth data and promoting safe digital environments.

4. Develop strategies to prepare for and respond to active threats and emergency situations involving youth.

5. Apply a holistic safety framework to create safer, more supportive environments for children in school and community settings.
